To determine the prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)–producing Enterobacteriaceae urinary tract infections (UTIs), researchers prospectively studied adults hospitalized with culture-confirmed UTI at 11 university-affiliated hospitals across the U.S. in 2018 and 2019.
The analysis included 527 patients (median age, 52; 62% women). Enterobacteriaceae, most commonly Escherichia coli, were present in 84% of cultures. Among all cultures, the prevalence of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae was 17.2%. Risk factors associated with ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae included recent use of antibiotics, recent hospitalization, recent residence in a long-term care facility, and history of antibiotic-resistant infections.
