Antihypertensive, antithrombotic, and lipid-lowering agents are effective at reducing the risk for recurrent cardiovascular events after stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). The interplay of factors involved in medication adherence is complex, but unwarranted medication discontinuation presents a barrier to realizing the full potential of medical therapy for secondary prevention. In this study, investigators evaluated medication initiation and discontinuation for 9817 adults with first-ever stroke or TIA hospitalized at 25 centers that participate in the Australian Stroke Clinical Registry, using nationwide electronic pharmacy data on medication dispensing and Medicare claims data on health system utilization.
