Longitudinal studies have shown that leisure activities lowered risk for dementia over follow-up times of <10 years. Now, researchers have conducted a prospective cohort study to determine the association between leisure activity and risk for dementia in 8280 participants (69% men; 91% white) in the U.K. over the following time periods and age groups: 1997–1999 (mean age, 56 years), 2002–2004 (mean age, 61 years), and 2007–2009 (mean age, 66 years).
Leisure activity scores were based on self-reported participation in 13 activities, such as household tasks, socializing, cultural excursions, and reading. Dementia diagnoses were based on electronic health record linkage data.
