The meningococcus group B (MGB) vaccine, 4CMenB, was licensed based on its safety and immunogenicity but without efficacy data from a randomized, controlled trial; thus, effectiveness data are needed to ascertain 4CMenB's real-world role in preventing MGB disease. Investigators in Portugal conducted a case-control study between 2014 and 2019. Cases consisted of children hospitalized with invasive meningococcal disease, and matched controls were children hospitalized for other conditions; vaccination records were ascertained for all participants to whom MGB vaccine had been offered electively and not as part of the national immunization program (nationally, vaccine uptake rose from 32.8% to 56.7% during the study period).
