The NAEEP guidelines were last updated in 2007. This update addresses managing asthma in children, adolescents, and adults.
Using intermittent inhaled corticosteroids (ICS)
Step 1 or mild intermittent asthma still is managed with as-needed short-acting β-agonists (SABAs).
In adolescents (age, ≥12) and adults, step 2 therapy for mild persistent asthma is either daily ICS plus rescue SABAs or as-needed ICS plus SABAs. A recommended regimen is 2 to 4 puffs of albuterol, followed by 80 to 250 µg of beclomethasone equivalent, every 4 hours as needed. (This requires 2 separate inhalers.)
