Management of Lyme Disease: An Update

Joint recommendations on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Lyme disease by three U.S. medical societies

Sponsoring Organizations: The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), and the American College of Rheumatology

Background and Objective

This update to the 2006 IDSA and 2007 AAN guidelines on the management of Lyme disease used current guideline development methodology. These guidelines do not address other tickborne infections.

Key Recommendations

As before, doxycycline is recommended for antibiotic prophylaxis after high-risk tick bites.
Treat patients with erythema migrans following Ixodes scapularis tick bites. No recommendation for or against antibiotic therapy is made for rash following lone star tick bites.
