Poliomyelitis virus type 2 was declared eradicated in 2015, but the number of vaccine-derived poliomyelitis cases has risen since then. The novel oral poliomyelitis virus type 2 vaccines (OPV2-c1 and OPV2-c2) were designed to be less likely to revert to neurovirulence. In a phase 2 trial from 2018 to 2019, investigators assessed the safety and immunogenicity of one or two doses of OPV2-c1 and OPV2-c2 in healthy adults and analyzed the outcomes in relation to safety and immunogenicity data from a phase 4 historical trial of OPV2 conducted in the same country (Belgium) in 2016.
