Previous studies have shown excess risk for alcohol misuse after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (RYGB). Now, in a retrospective cohort study from the U.S. Veterans Affairs healthcare system, researchers determined the prevalence of unhealthy alcohol use after either RYGB or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), the most common U.S. bariatric surgical procedure.
About 1600 patients who underwent LSG and about 900 patients who underwent RYGB were identified; about one quarter of these patients were women. Most patients did not have unhealthy alcohol use at baseline, according to the AUDIT-C screening tool.
