The USPSTF has reappraised and updated its 2015 recommendation statement on assessment and interventions to reduce tobacco use in adults, including pregnant women (NEJM JW Gen Med Nov 15 2015 and Ann Intern Med 2015; 163:622). The prevalence of tobacco use has remained relatively high since 2015, and tobacco products still are used by more than 20% of adults, including 7% of pregnant women.
Both behavioral and pharmacotherapy interventions (i.e., nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion hydrochloride sustained release, and varenicline) to reduce tobacco use are recommended strongly for nonpregnant adults (Grade A recommendation). In nonpregnant adults…
