The use of proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) in children and pregnant mothers has been suggested to increase risk for childhood asthma. These researchers analyzed 10 years of national Swedish healthcare registry data to assess the risk for being diagnosed with asthma in children <18 years who previously received a PPI (N=80,870 children) and in carefully matched children who did not receive a PPI (63% girls; mean age, 13 years). Asthma was defined by hospital diagnosis, outpatient specialist asthma care, or at least two prescriptions for asthma medication.
Overall, PPI use, compared with no PPI, was associated with developing asthma (hazard ratio, 1.57), and the risk did not differ by the way that asthma was defined. Risks were higher in childre…
