For patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis, trials have convincingly shown a relation between severity of internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis and risk for stroke. Such an association has been less certain for asymptomatic ICA stenosis. These authors analyzed data from the Oxford Vascular Study, a population-based study of patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke. Patients with asymptomatic ICA stenosis were identified and subsequently assessed for development of ipsilateral TIA or stroke. Of 2354 patients enrolled during the study period, 92% underwent carotid imaging (73% ultrasound and 27% magnetic resonance angiography).
In the 2178 patients with carotid imaging results, 97% had vascular risk factors. Asymptomatic IC…
