Many patients with osteoarthritis (OA) report disturbed sleep. In this randomized trial, U.S. researchers evaluated the effectiveness of telephone-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for insomnia in 372 older adults (mean age, 70) with OA-associated pain who scored ≥11 on the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI; score range, 0–28).
Participants were randomized to telephone-based CBT (6 sessions, over 8 weeks) or education only (control group). At 2 months post-treatment, the average ISI score decreased by 8.1 points in the CBT group and by 4.8 points in the control group — a significant difference.
