Cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs) are used routinely in clinical practice for those with Alzheimer disease (AD) dementia, although the long-term effects of these medications have been challenging to study. Analyzing data from a Swedish Web-based registry, researchers determined whether ChEI treatment started within 3 months of diagnosis with mild-to-moderate AD or mixed AD dementia was associated with incident rates of severe dementia and death, after accounting for covariates such as age, sex, comorbidities and other medications. ChEI treatments included donepezil, rivastigmine, and galantamine. Severe dementia was defined as a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of <10.
