Questions about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant persons and their newborns remain to be answered. Now, researchers report preliminary findings voluntarily provided through V-safe (a smartphone-based surveillance system created for the COVID-19 vaccination program) and the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) administered by CDC and the FDA.
Among 35,691 participants who received either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines and self-reported as pregnant in V-safe from December 14, 2020, to February 28, 2021, initial incidence of adverse reactions was largely comparable to that in vaccinated nonpregnant women (except for a slightly higher likelihood of nausea and vomiting after the second dose).
