Estimates of the strength of the association between type 2 diabetes and dementia have been somewhat variable, possibly because diabetes duration has not been considered in most analyses. In this population-based, prospective cohort study, researchers used a U.K. database to identify about 10,000 people (age range, 35–55) who were enrolled in 1982 and followed for a median 32 years; during this time, 1710 people developed type 2 diabetes, and 639 developed dementia.
At age 70, the rate of dementia was about 9 per 1000 person-years for people without diabetes; rates were 10, 13, and 19 per 1000 person-years for people in whom onset of diabetes was ≤5 years earlier, 6 to 10 years earlier, and >10 years earlier, respectively. Adjusted analyses …
