As more patients are transitioned to outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT), reduced clinical supervision raises the possibility of excess risk for complications (e.g., worsening infection, adverse drug effects, catheter-associated thromboses and infections). While 30-day readmissions are inevitable in some patients receiving OPAT, this metric has been utilized as a measure of healthcare delivery.
