Undesired pregnancy remains a public health challenge because many people find it difficult to identify a contraceptive that meets their personal needs. To explore associations between sexual satisfaction and contraceptive continuation, researchers surveyed 2027 U.S. women initiating a new contraceptive method.
One month after contraceptive initiation, most participants reported improvements in their sex lives, but 17% reported adverse effects on their sex lives. Discontinuation within 6 months of contraceptive initiation was more common among those reporting adverse effects. Changes in physical symptoms and mood in the first month after initiating contraception were much less predictive of continued use than were adverse effects.
