Likelihood of Thromboembolic Events After Receipt of the Oxford/AstraZeneca Vaccine

Risk for venous thromboembolism was doubled and risk for cerebral venous thrombosis 20-fold elevated in a vaccinated cohort in Denmark and Norway.

Several cases of thrombosis in uncommon locations (e.g., cerebral venous sinuses, hepatic veins) associated with severe thrombocytopenia have been reported 5 to 24 days after receiving the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine (also known as Vaxzevria), predominantly in women younger than 50. This condition, now termed thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), shares features with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia type II (NEJM JW Infect Dis May 2021 and N Engl J Med Apr 9 2021; [e-pub], multiple citations).
