A decade on, the effect of bone-modifying agents on breast cancer–related events remains unsettled. Practice guidelines (e.g., by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network) have suggested that bisphosphonates can be considered for postmenopausal women at high risk for recurrence. This question is now revisited by the SUCCESS-A trial, in which researchers randomized almost 3000 patients with early-stage breast cancer to receive intravenous zoledronate for either 5 years (4 mg every 3 months for 2 years, then every 6 months for 3 years) or 2 years (4 mg every 3 months).
