The EPIC-NSW study of the effectiveness of once-daily tenofovir/emtricitabine for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) initially enrolled 3700 predominantly gay and bisexual men at high risk for HIV acquisition in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. After enrollment targets were met, demand for PrEP continued but public funding was unavailable. Thus, the investigators expanded enrollment to all eligible individuals in NSW and followed them for ≤3 years. The primary outcome of this prospective implementation study was new HIV infections; adherence was estimated by calculating a ratio of dispensed pills over total days (medication possession ratio [MPR]).
Among 9709 participants, 98% received PrEP at least once and had at least one follow-up HIV test.…
