Conjugate Vaccine Can Protect Infants and Children Against Typhoid Fever

In an urban Bangladesh population with high burden from typhoid fever, Vi-tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine protected infants and children against this disease.

In many low- and middle-income countries, typhoid fever remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in the young. A vaccine consisting of the Vi polysaccharide outer capsule of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi conjugated to tetanus toxoid (Vi-TT) has been prequalified by WHO. In a trial in urban Bangladesh, 150 clusters of about 1350 residents each were randomized to receive a single dose of Vi-TT (Bharat Biotech International, Hyderabad, India) or Japanese encephalitis (JE; control) vaccine. Over 60,000 infants and children (age range, 9 months–16 years) were vaccinated and followed for an average of 17 months.
