Diabetes, both type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 (T2DM), are among the most serious chronic conditions in children and teens. The Search for Diabetes in Youth study was an assessment of the prevalence of T1DM and T2DM among children and teens in 6 regional clinical centers, including the Indian Health Service in Arizona and New Mexico, in 2001, 2009, and 2017.
The estimated prevalence of T1DM in the population of youths <20 years increased significantly, from 1.48 per 1000 youths in 2001 to 1.93 in 2009 and 2.15 in 2017, with an average annual increase of 3.4% from 2001 to 2009 and 1.4% from 2009 to 2017.
