Does the age of pediatric index cases affect household transmission of SARS-CoV-2? In this Canadian cohort study of households with an index case in a family member younger than 18 years, investigators examined the association between the index case's age group (range, 0–3, 4–8, 9–13, and 14–17 years) and occurrence of a subsequent SARS-CoV-2–positive case in the household.
Of 6280 households with a pediatric index case (mean age, 10.7; median household size, 4), 1717 (27%) had a subsequent household transmission. Compared with 14- to 17-year-old cases, those in younger age ranges were more likely to be associated with daycare or school outbreaks and shorter delays in testing.
