Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant yeast that persists in healthcare environments through colonization of medical devices and patients. Species identification of Candida from non-sterile body sites, although not routinely performed, can enable detection of C. auris colonization and trigger implementation of transmission-based precautions. In 2018, a laboratory in Southern California began to find Candida species in urine specimens obtained from nine long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs). In February 2019, a single isolate of C. auris was identified from a facility in Orange County, CA.
