The growing number of immunocompromised patients has increased the likelihood of serious infections with unusual gram-negative bacteria (e.g., Achromobacter spp., Burkholderia cepacia species complex, Aeromonas spp., Chryseobacterium spp., Alcaligenes faecalis, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia). As these bacteria are not often encountered in FDA approval and registrational studies of newer antibiotics, their antimicrobial susceptibilities remain poorly characterized.
