The hard-won demonstrations of efficacy of tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) and endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for ischemic stroke in pivotal clinical trials were just the beginning of the long path to bring these treatments into widespread clinical practice and to realize broader benefits for patients and populations. For a clearer view of the recent effects of these efforts, investigators estimated the proportion of ischemic stroke patients that received TPA and EVT using data from the National Inpatient Sample from 2016 to 2018 and then evaluated previously described disparities in use of these therapies.
Overall, TPA use increased from 8.8% of all adult ischemic stroke hospitalizations in 2016 to 10.2% in 2018 while corresponding EVT …
