Apolipoprotein B (apoB)–containing lipoproteins have a causal role in atherogenesis. In this prospective cohort study, investigators used data from the U.K. Biobank and two large clinical trials — FOURIER (NCT01764633) and IMPROVE-IT (NCT00202878) — to test associations between apoB, non–high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non–HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides and risk for incident myocardial infarction (MI).
There were two study populations: A primary prevention cohort consisting of 389,529 patients not taking lipid-lowering therapy and a secondary prevention cohort including 40,430 patients with a history of atherosclerosis and taking statins.
