Increased risks for these conditions were associated with receipt of the Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccine in both men and women and receipt of the Pfizer-BioNTech BNT162b2 vaccine only in women.
Recent studies have shown that SARS-CoV-2 vaccination is associated with very low elevated risk for myocarditis and myopericarditis (NEJM JW Cardiol Oct 2021 and JAMA 2021; 326:1210). To further examine this association, investigators conducted a population-based cohort study involving approximately 4.1 million Danish residents, of whom 84% received the Pfizer-BioNTech BNT162b2 vaccine and 12% received the Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccine.
Within 28 days of receiving either vaccine, 269 individuals developed myocarditis or myopericarditis (the primary outcome), defined as a hospital diagnosis of either condition, increased troponin levels, and a hospital stay >24 hours.
