Although many patients who present with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) also have signs of cerebral small vessel disease such as white matter hyperintensities and cerebral microhemorrhages (CMBs) on imaging, the precise relationships between small vessel disease and ICH are not straightforward. For example, multiple studies have found a higher incidence of ICH in patients with CMBs, but data on whether CMBs predict acute hematoma characteristics for these incident ICHs, such as hematoma volume or hematoma expansion, are conflicting.
