Remdesivir for Adults Hospitalized with COVID-19

In two studies, remdesivir was associated with lower mortality and better pulmonary function compared with standard care, including dexamethasone.

Debate persists about the role of the antiviral remdesivir in treating hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Now, two recent open-label studies shed light on the use of this medication.

In CATCO (a Canadian substudy of SOLIDARITY, an international open-label, randomized, controlled trial of various COVID-19 therapeutics compared with standard care; NEJM JW Infect Dis Feb 2021 and N Engl J Med 2020 Dec 2; [e-pub]), investigators randomized 1267 hospitalized adult patients between August 2020 and April 2021 with SARS-CoV-2 infection to either 9 days of intravenous remdesivir plus standard care or standard care alone.
