Debate persists about the role of the antiviral remdesivir in treating hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Now, two recent open-label studies shed light on the use of this medication.
In CATCO (a Canadian substudy of SOLIDARITY, an international open-label, randomized, controlled trial of various COVID-19 therapeutics compared with standard care; NEJM JW Infect Dis Feb 2021 and N Engl J Med 2020 Dec 2; [e-pub]), investigators randomized 1267 hospitalized adult patients between August 2020 and April 2021 with SARS-CoV-2 infection to either 9 days of intravenous remdesivir plus standard care or standard care alone.
