Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a peripheral nervous system disease that can frequently result in respiratory insufficiency. Mechanical ventilation is required in approximately 10% to 30% of patients with the disease. Delayed intubation may lead to worse outcomes associated with pneumonia and aspiration. Predicting early respiratory insufficiency is critical in order to admit patients to intensive care when required. The Erasmus GBS Respiratory Insufficiency Score (EGRIS) is a model developed to estimate the risk for respiratory failure. At admission and according to EGRIS, three clinical factors are explored: the time from onset of weakness to admission, presence of facial and/or bulbar weakness, and severity of muscle weakness.
