People with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are at increased risk for dementia, but some revert to normal cognition. Researchers analyzed data from the Nun Study to determine how cognitive reserve was associated with cognitive trajectories from MCI. Normal cognition (NC), MCI, and dementia were determined by scores from the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease and assessment of functional status. Indicators of cognitive reserve included educational attainment, high school academic performance, and written language skills assessed by idea density and grammatical complexity on handwritten autobiographies composed in their early 20s.
