Functional and cognitive impairments after intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalizations have been well described; whether socioeconomic disadvantage affects such declines is unknown. Investigators retrospectively evaluated a sample of >600 geographically diverse, community-dwelling, older people (age, ≥65) who survived their ICU stays to hospital discharge. Patients with socioeconomic disadvantage (those with dual eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid) were compared with those who were eligible for Medicare only, using annual in-person interviews. Patients admitted from nursing homes and patients with high levels of disability or probable dementia before their ICU admissions were excluded from the analysis.
