Cardiogenic shock (CS) is a serious complication of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). To examine sex-based differences in the risk profile, management, and outcomes of patients presenting with acute myocardial infarction cardiogenic shock (AMI-CS), researchers analyzed data from a national MI registry on 17,195 patients (37% women) admitted with AMI-CS between 2008 and 2017. In-hospital all-cause mortality was the primary outcome. Result were as follows:
Women were older than men, had higher prevalence of comorbidities, and had poorer renal function.
In multivariable analyses controlling for patient and hospital parameters, women were less likely to receive guideline-directed medical therapy within 24 hours and at hospital discharge.
