Does vitamin D supplementation lower risk for fractures in people who aren't obviously vitamin D deficient? To address this question, researchers conducted an “umbrella review” of 32 previously published systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized trials (13 addressed vitamin D plus calcium, and 19 addressed vitamin D alone).
Most of the meta-analyses showed that supplementation with vitamin D plus calcium was associated with a small but statistically significant absolute reduction in hip fractures or any fractures, but this benefit was not observed in analyses limited to community-dwelling people.
