COVID-19 vaccines are currently approved for use in children aged 5 years and older. Initial studies demonstrating efficacy, performed in the Delta era, showed excellent protection against infection, hospitalization, and severe disease. Clinical outcomes in children hospitalized with COVID-19 during the Delta surge have been reported (NEJM JW Infect Dis Mar 2022 and MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 2021; 70:1766), but there is less information about vaccine efficacy and duration of protection against new viral variants.
