A broad spectrum of neuropathology, including ischemia and infarctions, is seen in acute infections with SARS-CoV-2, even in young adults. Lingering neurological symptoms after acute infection, including fatigue, dizziness, headache, and cognitive problems, also are common and can persist for months in the syndrome called long COVID. Brain biopsies are not warranted for clinical care, and autopsies are rare in deceased patients who previously survived acute COVID-19 infections. Therefore, assessing the neuropathology of these symptoms is difficult.
