Although immunosuppressed patients (who have diminished responses to most vaccines) were not included in the initial placebo-controlled trials of COVID-19 vaccines, reduced serologic responses to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination have been demonstrated among solid organ transplant recipients (e.g., NEJM JW Infect Dis May 2021 and JAMA 2021 Mar 15; [e-pub]). However, information about clinical protection for these patients is lacking. In a retrospective, observational study, researchers in the Czech Republic used national registry data to report on COVID-19 infections in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) during the initial vaccine roll-out in early 2021.
