A recent study revealed that U.S. Medicare Part D spending on generic prescriptions often is higher than the pricing for these drugs at national pharmacy chains (JAMA Intern Med 2021; 181:1414). In 2022, the Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company (MCCPDC) launched an online pharmacy that sells >100 common generic drugs with transparent pricing (i.e., cost of ingredients and manufacturing plus 15% margin, US$3 pharmacy dispensing fee, and $5 shipping fee). In a cross-sectional study, investigators compared the cost of generic drugs sold by MCCPDC with what Medicare Part D paid for those drugs in 2020 and estimated potential savings from purchasing from MCCPDC.
