Previous studies have found higher rates of ischemic stroke in non-Hispanic Black (NHB) and Hispanic patients relative to non-Hispanic white (NHW) patients. Less is known regarding mortality according to stroke subtype. These authors investigated 30-day mortality and long-term mortality (beyond 1 year) in the Veterans Affairs system. Cases were identified between 2002 and 2012; death was recorded using a national registry. Mortality rate was identified in different time periods, including within 30 days, up to 365 days, and beyond 1 year. Mortality rates were compared by racial/ethnic group and according to stroke subtype, including ischemic stroke (IS), intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).
