Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) — usually derived from serum creatinine measurement, age, and sex — is used routinely to make a variety of clinical decisions. Direct measurement of GFR (mGFR) is more accurate, but it requires injection of an agent such as iohexol and is not used widely in clinical practice. Although population-level differences in mGFR and eGFR might be negligible, individual-level differences have not been well studied.
