The changing world climate may have important implications for cardiovascular risk. To examine the association between extreme heat events and cardiovascular mortality in the U.S., investigators used county-level daily maximum heat levels in the summer and county-level monthly cardiovascular mortality rates for adults aged ≥20 years from 2008 to 2017. They focused on extreme heat days, defined as those with a maximum heat index ≥90 and a temperature in the 99th percentile of the maximum heat index in the baseline period of 1979–2007 for that day.
