Studies of acupuncture to treat chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) have had conflicting results and methodologic limitations. This study was performed as a randomized clinical trial (RCT) in China, with 108 to 110 patients with CTTH in each group. The active-treatment group received acupuncture in fixed sites with a depth of 12.5 to 20 mm at the skull (six sites) as well as both hands and feet (four sites). Each acupuncture site was needled to achieve so-called deqi sensation (i.e., a sensation such as soreness, numbness, fullness, and heaviness), while the control group received the same treatment except with superficial acupuncture at a depth of 2 mm and avoiding deqi sensation.
