Internal medicine residents often perform or supervise inpatient procedures before obtaining full competency. Attending physicians often lack these procedural skills, which results in ineffective resident supervision. To help address this deficiency, educators at Vanderbilt developed a medical procedure service and tracked outcomes. Twelve faculty — who demonstrated competency via required clinical procedural experience and formal simulation training — comprised the procedure service. Residents participated in 1-week rotations. The service was available from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., every day.
