Artificial sweeteners (e.g., aspartame, acesulfame potassium, sucralose) are found in thousands of processed foods and are common substitutes for table sugar. Some studies have suggested that these compounds might confer adverse health effects, including excess risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Investigators estimated artificial sweetener intake in a French cohort of >100,000 adults who completed detailed 24-hour diet reports and health questionnaires for as long as 12 years; reported CVD events were verified by external sources.
