Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) can visualize the mucosa of the entire gastrointestinal tract and has a major role in evaluating obscure or occult gastrointestinal bleeding. To evaluate the safety and efficacy of VCE in an older population, investigators in Israel reviewed VCE results in 92 older patients (age, ≥80) and compared them to results in 443 “younger” patients (age range, 65–79).
Anemia was the most common indication for VCE in all patients. Complete visualization of the small bowel was achieved in ≈95% of patients in both groups. Clinically significant findings were more common in older patients (53% vs. 40%).
