Both the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NEJM JW Gen Med Jan 15 2021 and JAMA 2020; 324:2301) and the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines recommend using single maintenance and reliever therapy (MART) for all patients with moderate-to-severe asthma. GINA goes a step further and states that albuterol should no longer be used and that inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) with formoterol in a single inhaler should be the reliever of choice.
