How does the scholastic performance of adolescents who were exposed to carbamazepine in utero compare with that of adolescents not exposed to antiseizure medications in utero? To find out, researchers conducted a population-based cohort study of children in Denmark born between 1996 and 2002 whose mothers were taking carbamazepine during pregnancy. They compared the ninth-grade exit examination scores in Danish and mathematics between children who were and those who were not exposed to antiseizure medications in utero. Scores were adjusted for socioeconomic factors and comorbidities. The authors also performed multiple sensitivity analyses to examine the effects of indication for treatment and of other medications.
