This year, the NEJM Journal Watch Infectious Disease top 10 list includes 11 stories as the editors felt that, while 3 COVID-19 studies were important to highlight (covering nirmatrelvir/ritonavir, tixagevimab/cilgavimab, and long COVID-19), 8 other reports were also important to acknowledge. These include practice-changing studies on treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and cryptococcal meningitis, as well as a report that changes our understanding of tuberculosis transmission. The editors also chose studies on use of cabotegravir to prevent HIV infection in women as well as optimal antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV-infected women during pregnancy.
