In an important new study in 2022, researchers compared computed tomography angiography (CTA) with invasive coronary angiography as a first step in defining coronary anatomy in patients with stable chest pain and suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). In the DISCHARGE study, ≈3600 patients with intermediate probability of CAD (10%–60%) — about one third of whom already had undergone functional testing — were randomized to CTA or invasive angiography. The primary endpoint of cardiovascular-related death or nonfatal myocardial infarction or stroke was not significantly different in the two groups during a median 3.5-year follow-up.
